Certified Programme in Management of Security Intelligence and Safety in the Workplace

This combined programme in Management of Security, Intelligence and Safety in the Workplace delivers an integrated approach to occupational health, safety, and security management.

It is tailored for managers, directors, and other professionals responsible for daily operational oversight of workplace safety and security, and is equally valuable to practitioners seeking to strengthen cross-disciplinary competence.

The course addresses core principles of health and safety management, including the legislative framework, risk assessment methodologies, and recognised control standards. Delegates will receive and work with health and safety checklists, reporting templates, and record-keeping forms. Additional focus is given to specific domains such as construction safety, environmental management, and international best practices.

A comprehensive review of legislative instruments will be undertaken, including:

  • Site Waste Management Plans Regulations

  • Control of Artificial Radiation at Work Regulations

  • Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations (CHIP4)

  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

  • European Classification, Packaging and Labelling Regulations

Beyond health and safety, the programme also explores workplace security management. Key topics include:

  • Physical security (e.g. door entry systems, equipment cages, key cabinets)

  • Asset protection (e.g. safes, secure storage)

  • Organisational security planning

  • Internal communication protocols for safety and security

  • Environmental factors affecting security decisions

  • Sector-specific and premises-based risk factors

Particular attention is given to balancing effective security with openness and accessibility, a key tension in modern workplace design. Delegates will develop the skills to create and maintain a security posture that supports both operational integrity and user-friendly environments for staff, clients, and visitors.

Special focus areas include:

  • Security operations in the public sector

  • Conflict management strategies in private security contexts

Legal and regulatory aspects are a key component of the programme. Relevant statutes covered include:

  • The Data Protection Act 1998 (in the context of CCTV and surveillance)

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Compliance with these laws is essential to ensuring employers fulfil their duty of care obligations and maintain lawful workplace surveillance and incident management systems.

Certifications:

Delegates who complete the programme (subject to meeting assessment requirements) will receive two recognised qualifications:

  • HSE-approved IOSH Certificate

  • SIA-approved Security Certificate

Note: A written assessment is mandatory for each certification. Terms and conditions apply.

Objectives
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies, including the historical and legislative drivers that shaped the current occupational health and safety landscape.

  • Establish and maintain health and safety management systems that meet industry standards, defining and integrating clear roles and responsibilities for all workplace actors: employees, employers, contractors, directors, and managers.

  • Conduct effective occupational health and safety risk assessments aligned with HSE standards, including application of control measures, active monitoring, periodic review, and formal audit procedures.

  • Lead and coordinate workplace incident and accident investigations, ensuring full compliance with reporting obligations. Manage diverse workplace hazards including those associated with:

    • Personnel and vehicle movement

    • Manual and mechanical handling

    • Electrical installations

    • Fire safety

    • Chemical and biological exposures

    • Physical and psychosocial health concerns

    • Construction site activities

    • Environmental risk factors

  • Independently design and operate a functional Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) using HSE-approved methodologies, checklists, and documentation templates.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive workplace safety and security plan, with capabilities to identify, evaluate, and mitigate both physical and operational security risks.

  • Improve access control procedures, optimise external perimeter and parking area security, and manage surveillance infrastructure including CCTV systems in line with data protection legislation.

  • Scale and upgrade workplace security systems, including overseeing recruitment, screening, and training of security personnel to meet organisational and legal standards.

  • Enhance competencies in protecting valuable equipment and safeguarding sensitive corporate and personnel data, including awareness and application of cyber security best practices within the physical security framework.

Who should attend

This programme is recommended for personnel at all levels who are involved in the management of security and safety responsibilities. It is particularly suited to senior managers, managers, and supervisors working in specialist public and private sector organisations.
